End to End walk UK

  Posted by end2end

Is anyone out there planning to walk UK end to end ie Lands End to John O’Groats, or has anyone done it?

I am currently planning the walk for 2009/10 but there are logistical problems being based in Australia

I would love to be able to discuss the planning issues with someone with a similar interest/ambition

Thanks

Dear KerryC Thankyou for your entry I regularly review John Butler’s site for E2E and plan to largely follow his route which is mainly footpaths. I am a regular skiier and hiker in Victoria. I would be interested to know how you rate the Pennines in comparison to hiking Mt Bogong. There are dire warnings regarding the danger and difficulty of the Pennines, yet the photos of it look fairly benign. Look forward to your reply.

hi end2end. Just come across this while browsing during planning a Pennine Way walk in a few weeks. We are also in Oz and walk when we can in Uk. Done WHW , C2C and Offa and planning a full E2E as soon as we are retired. Would be interested to know your plans and results of your walk when you do it. We plan E2E offroad using LDFP joined together

HI End2End,by cutting the 1-25 maps to show my inland route through Cornwall,Devon to Street, with McCloys guide book the weight is about 1Kg.In Street we will be staying at the youth hostal were I have sent the next set of maps that will take us to Bath.In Bath I will buy a guide book for the Cotswold way and maps to take us up to Gloucester. From Gloucester we will buy maps to Worcester following the river Severn. From Worcester to Dudley were we live its the Monachs way which I know well.Should be home end of April eagar to start on the next 700 miles I hope.1 April we start, Lands End to Dudley is 350 miles (about) Speak to you end of April?

Dear Mr & Mrs M I will try the backpackers website as you advise. Why do you suggest the 1:50k maps for the walk, I was assuming the 1:25k would be better being twice the magnification; although I was considering 1:50k for the Pennines, where route finding would seem easier. Do the 1:50k show camp sites as well? Also, I have been reviewing the “I’m so Dave” site where he buys maps along the way. This is an important consideration for weight and volume in the pack (approx 6kg for full LeJog in 1:25k). What is your strategy for maps? Regards E2E

hi end2end,The last walk we did 100 miles Edale to Dudley(Limestone Way&Staffordshire Way) we free camped 6 nights out of 7.I like a bed and a bath once a week.A lot of the time farmers will let you camp for free, camping sights marked on the 1-25 maps are commercial sights. The Backpackers Club is a good web sight for camp sights(www.backpackersclub.co.uk).The 1-25 maps are good they show everything but 50+ will be needed for LeJog.Hope to hear from you soon.

Dear Mr & Mrs Merryhell99 I would also plan to camp as much as possible. I note that the OS 1 :25000 maps are very good at showing camp farms etc. Is this what you plan to use? What opportunities are there for ‘free-camping’? Regards

http://www.landsendjohnogroats.info/ is the link to get you some info on this walk. Alternatively, google “Lands End to John O Groats”.

It has been done before and those who complete it can join the select “end to end” club.

We’re just planning to do the South West Coat Path from Minehead to Poole. Our second choice after considering and researching the end to end.

    Good luck to you
