Pike of Blisco to Bowfell round(route)
Start / Finish Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel
£5.80 per day parking (April 2009) or alongside road.
Walk up the road past Wall End farm, take a path to the left on the south side of Redacre Gill. Path starts easy the steepens before you see the final approach to Pike of Blisco summit(s). Some small scrambling here through crags, easy. Ascent about 600m.
After a brew and a sandwich to enjoy the views, walk down to Red Tarn descent 200m and take the clear path to Crinkle Crags. This is mostly easy walking over high fell, the views open out as you walk along.
Crinkle Crags are rocky underfoot and have few technical problems in good visibility. It is easy to become confused in low visibility if you do not have navigation tools and skills.. You have ascended another 350m and have a series of small ascents and descents as you follow the fell top. Bad step on Crinkle 2 can be avoided, this is a 10-14ft small rock climbing manouevre, by a path to the left (looking north).
At the end of Crinkle crags heading north you will drop down to Three Tarns losing a total of 175m in height. The path to Bowfell summit is in front of you and a further 250m of ascent will gain you the summit and views of most of Lakeland. Scafells to the west, Helvellyn to the East, Coniston range to the south and Skiddaw range to the north. This is dependant on the weather to a very large extent.
Retrace your steps down to Three Tarns and take a clear footpath east down the Band back to the valley of Langdale and a well earned pint.
Total time depends on walking rate or how often you wish to stop for the view.
