  2. River Leam/ River Avon/ Grand Union Canal Paddle (route)
An easy paddle but with two portages to get up onto the aquaduct and back onto the river. There are two weirs to portage, which are very safe to shoot.
  3. River Wey Canoe or Kayak trip (route)
Put in at Newark Priory by the B367 crossing the river Wey Navigation not far from Guildford in Surrey on the OS Landranger Map 186. There is a small public car park (get there before the fisherman in the open season by arriving early) Launch to the left of the bridge when coming from the A3 Ripley direction. We headed up river towards Paper Court Lock near Paper Court Farm. Port at Paper Court lock and continue to follow the canal navigation keeping left all the time. It is a straight route pass under the A247 and come up to Worsfold gates. (flood gates that are normally open From here swing almost 360° to the right. Following the original old course of the river Wey. Head towards Cartbridge. I had read that you can port on the right and use the drainage channel on the right to go back towards Paper Court Lock, but I wanted to explore the old river You could see by my map the river disappears under a building in front of us so begin to slow down as much as possible. When you seea brick wall 50 feet high with 4 or 5 dark tunnels, and no light at their ends, perform a quick port around this obstacle that is St Martha’s Printing Mill. (Old Woking) You can find somewhere to launch on the other side of the Mill, and with a full head of steam gratis of the outflow from the old Mill you soon find yourselves viewing an old Norman Church at Old Woking (Saint Peter's) looking like a quintessentially English scene with cows and bull rushes along the banks of the river. This scenery stretches for about 2 miles but it passes pretty quickly with help from the stream, the river has some tremendous bends, before you know it you pop out at the back on the main channel just below Papercourt Lock, then there was a short paddle back to Newark Priory
  4. Kimmeridge fossil hunt (route)
This is a very short stroll around Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset, part of the Jurassic Coast, one of the most spectacular World Heritage Sites. Kimmeridge is a really interesting place to spend an hour or so as the ground is littered with fossils (which by the way you are allowed to collect if loose but you can't go down with a hammer and start hacking away at the rock - it's a protected site don't you know). Kimmeridge has a natural stone ledge which extends into the bay making the landscape rather lunar! There are plenty of rock pools at low tide which is great for kids and for surfers there are a couple of reefs. When I was there yesterday there were lots of kayakers, which I reckon would be a great way to see this amazing coastline which runs from Exmouth on the East Devon coast, to just north of Swanage on the Purbeck Coast. Check out the Jurassic coast website. P.S. This area is a military training zone so you may be restricted on where you walk.
  5. Rhoscolyn Paddle (route)
Along the coast frm Borthwen round Rhoscolyn head to the Black Arch and the White Arch Return via Rhoscolyn Beacon and play with the seals.
  6. Round Puffin Island (route)
A brilliant paddle on a nice day. Check tides before you go and be aware of tide race through the Sound.
  7. Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door paddle (route)
Park in the Lulworth Cove car park. It's a bit of a walk from the car park to the water with your canoe/kayak, but worth it! Check the weather, wind and tides before you plan your trip. I would only do it on a sunny, calm day so you can go in close to the rocks and caves. You can paddle through Stair Hole, under Durdle Door's arch, and through a hole in the cliff at Bat's Head....but watch out for rocks underneath as you come out. Go as far as you feel comfortable, park up on the beach and enjoy the lovely Dorset coast.
